Legal Tinting

In North Carolina, the legal amount of window tint is determined by something called Visible Light Transmission (VLT). VLT is the percentage of light that a car window is allowed to permit. Window tinting laws in North Carolina vary and are dependent upon the type of car and the location of the window.

So, what percentage of window tint is legal in North Carolina?

In North Carolina, all passenger vehicles must have a VLT of 35% on all of its windows. Windshields are only allowed to have window tinting on the top five inches (AS1 line), and the tint must not be reflective. Truck, vans, and SUVs must also have a VLT of 35% on all front windows but can have any level of tint on the back and rear windows. Additionally, North Carolina does permit reflective tint, but can be no more than 25% reflective.

If your car has a VLT that is outside of the restrictions in North Carolina, you could be subjected to a “repair order” issued by local law enforcement officers. Repair orders require drivers that have a vehicle with unsafe or prohibited features, such as window tinting, to have the issue resolved. Not complying with the repair order could result in fines or suspension of your driver’s license.
